When and how to visit

La Serena has a semi-arid coastal climate: sunshine most of the year, a wide gap between day and night temperatures, and morning fog in some months. These guidelines help you pick the best moment.

Climate and best seasons

Summer

Dec–Feb · 16–26 °C

High season. Long, bright days, a busy beach and more traffic on Avenida del Mar. Visit early or at sunset.

Autumn

Mar–May · 11–22 °C

Very pleasant, quiet months with warm light and fewer visitors. Excellent for photography and for walking the seafront.

Winter

Jun–Aug · 8–18 °C

Cooler and more humid, with morning coastal mist. Rain is scarce but can appear, and the Pacific wind is felt strongly on the viewpoint.

Spring

Sep–Nov · 11–22 °C

Mild weather, clean skies and good visibility across the bay. One of the best times to combine the lighthouse with trips to the Elqui Valley.

Best times of day

The site opens Tuesday to Sunday in two blocks, 10:00–14:00 and 14:30–17:00. Depending on the light and the wind, each slot offers a different experience.

  • Sunrise Eastern light strikes the tower head-on and the city looks crisp. Ideal for photos without crowds, though the site is still closed.
  • 10:00–12:00 The quietest part of opening hours: fewer visitors, mild temperatures and good visibility.
  • 12:00–15:00 Strongest sun and the busiest stretch. Useful if you want the museum and the craft fair; come with sun protection.
  • 18:00–20:00 The best light of the day, with the sun dropping over the Pacific. The viewpoint is usually shut, but the seafront and beach are at their best.

📷 Photography tips

  • Shoot in the golden hour: the low light of late afternoon and sunset brings out the battlements and the colour of the stone.
  • Frame from the beach in front of the base to get the Pacific and the tower in a single image.
  • On coastal-mist days, use the fog: the battlemented silhouette gains drama against the white.
  • Move north along Avenida del Mar for urban context shots with the city behind the tower.
  • On clear nights the area is good for astrophotography, though avenue lighting forces long exposures.
  • Respect the marked areas: the climb to the viewpoint and the railings have safety rules.
